After opening Sept. 3, the new Wayne County Jail was faced with a number of issues, one of them being a cyberattack last month officials say stripped them of the ability to access their system or prisoner information, the Detroit News reports. Officials would not say how long that problem lasted.
Kara Berg of the Detroit News reports:
The cyberattack, which sheriff's officials have spoken little about publicly, is one of many issues endured at the 2,280-bed jail after it opened Sept. 3. Complaints have surged, from problems with inmates being held in the jail beyond their release dates to some defense attorneys being unable to meet with clients because they couldn't be found.
The Wayne County Sheriff's Office called many of the issues growing pains at the jail, which is part of the county's massive new $500 million Criminal Justice Center that also houses the Wayne County Circuit Court and juvenile detention facility. Officials said after working through the serious challenges posed by the cyberattack, which the FBI is investigating, they've resolved most of them and protected their systems from being vulnerable again.
