Since leaving the Detroit Police Department in 2021, James Craig has had little success in the political arena. He was booted from the race for governor in 2022 for having bad signatures on his petitions. And his bid this year for U.S. Senate fizzled out before it got very far.

Now, Craig, who joined the Repubican party after leaving the department, has expressed interest in running for mayor of Detroit in 2025.

"Over last several months, I have had a number of city employees and Detroiters approach me and suggest that I consider running for mayor," Detroit's former police chief wrote in a statement to WXYZ.  "I will continue to explore the possibility. In my 44 years as a public safety servant, the best part of my career was serving the citizens of Detroit in the last eight years."

The field for mayor could be crowded. It's expected to include Detroit City Council President Mary Sheffield and former Detroit Council President Saunteel Jenkins.
