Talk to people in certain Detroit neighborhoods and they'll tell you crime is still a pressing issue.

That being said, the Detroit News, citing police statistics, reports that the city is on pace in 2024 to record the fewest criminal homicides since 1965, while carjackings through Monday had plummeted to the lowest level since the Detroit Police Department began tracking the crime in the 1990s, according to police statistics.

George Hunter of the News writes:

Non-fatal shootings and overall violent crime in Detroit in 2024 also dropped to the lowest levels in decades through Dec. 30. But the numbers were marred by high-profile incidents that included a July block party shootout that resulted in Michigan's largest mass shooting in terms of victims, and a double homicide in September during a Detroit Lions tailgate party near downtown.

While Detroit's homicide rate per 100,000 residents has also plunged to a level unseen since 1970, it remains among the highest in the nation.
