Last year, the Detroit Pistons won a total of 14 games and ended up in last place in the Eastern Conference.

So far this year, they've won 32 games and are currently in a playoff spot.

On top of that, they're currently on a seven-game winning streak.

That's all caught the attention of the Wall Street Journal's basketball writer Robert O’Connell, who has written a story titled: "They Were the Worst Team in Basketball. Now They’re The Biggest Surprise in NBA History."

He writes of the latest streak:

And this isn’t simply a random hot stretch. Two-thirds of the way through this NBA season, Detroit has climbed all the way into playoff position, with a 32-26 record, good for sixth place in the Eastern Conference standings.

That’s more than just a change of fortunes. In the annals of NBA history, it may be the single most spectacular turnaround ever recorded.

Only five teams in basketball history have enjoyed a bigger year-over-year leap in win percentage than Detroit’s 37% improvement, according to Stats Perform. But all of those teams had won at least 24% of their games the previous season. The Pistons had won just 17%.
