It's something we rarely think about, especially in Detroit, where the 313 area code is beloved and proudly displayed on t-shirts and hats.

However, the Michigan Public Service Commission says 313 numbers are running low, so eventually, it will begin issuing the 679 area code in Detroit and its closest suburbs.

The 313 area code currently covers Detroit, Hamtramck, Highland Park, Allen Park, Dearborn, Dearborn Heights, Ecorse, the Grosse Pointes, Inkster, Lincoln Park, Redford Township, River Rouge, and Taylor.

When will this happen?
Starting Oct. 7, all local calls within the 313 area code must include 10 digits, including the area code, according to a commission press release. Calls dialed with only seven digits will not go through, and callers may receive a message instructing them to hang up and redial using all 10 digits.

The commission stated that new numbers with the 679 area code could be issued as early as this November. However, 679 won't be assigned until all available 313 numbers are exhausted, which is expected to happen in the fourth quarter of 2027—though that projection may change.

Customers with a 313 number will not need to change their number.
