The March 2024 collapse of the Francis Scott Key Bridge in Baltimore after a cargo ship crashed into it, sent chills and fears across the country and served as a stark reminder of the vulnerability of bridges.

Now, in the wake of accident which claimed six lives, the National Transportation Safety Board has issued a report recommending that 68 U.S. bridges, including the Mackinac Bridge, undergo a safety review, The Detroit News reports:

The Mackinac Bridge Authority, which operates within the Michigan Department of Transportation and oversees bridge maintenance and operation, confirmed that it is reviewing the NTSB recommendation.

'As always, the Mackinac Bridge Authority’s highest priorities are the safety of our state’s most iconic bridge and the travelers who use it,' said James Lake, a spokesman for the Michigan Department of Transportation.
