Greektown, a Detroit gem that has had its share of ups and downs over the years, including the shuttering of some of the top restaurants, is undergoing a $20 million revamp on Monroe Street.

JC Reindl of the Detroit Free Press reports:

The $20 million streetscape transformation will widen the sidewalks, eliminate the curbs, add bollards and new brick pavers, plant over 45 trees and cut the number of vehicle lanes from two to one along a four-block stretch of Monroe. The goal is to make Greektown more attractive and pedestrian-friendly, with greater space for restaurants to offer outdoor seating.

The project, which is being funded by state dollars, is expected to be completed in the summer of 2026. The  Greektown Neighborhood Partnership is behind the project.

Monroe Street will be closed for traffic, but restaurants and shops will remain open for business.
