As expected, Republican Congressman John James is running for governor.

"It's time to get Michigan's government out of fantasyland and back to common sense," James said in a statement posted on X on Monday. "President Trump and I have been in each other's corner through thick and thin for eight years — there’s no reason that will end now.

"He's doing his part to Make America Great Again, and I'll do mine to bring prosperity and sanity back to Michigan."

Deadline Detroit first reported on March 19 that James planned to run for governor.

"John James is definitely running for governor, and he's putting together a great team. He expects to get Trump's endorsement, which should clear out the field," a source told Deadline Detroit at the time. "People are going to run against him, but how are they going to win?"

Some have speculated that James could win if Detroit Mayor Mike Duggan, who is running for governor as an Idependent, splits the vote with the Democratic candidate in the general election.
