Abdul El-Sayed
Democrat Abdul El-Sayed, a physician who recently stepped down as director of Wayne County's health department, announced Thursday that he's running for U.S. Senate.
"I'm running for U.S. Senate," he posted on X. "Because in the state that built the American Dream, it shouldn't be this hard to get by."
El-Sayed joins Democratic state Sen. Mallory McMorrow, a rising star in the party, in the race for Senate. Both are regarded as liberals.
Democratic Congresswoman Haley Stevens, more of a centrist, has been mentioned as a possible candidate.
On the Republican side, former Congressman Mike Rogers, who also served as an FBI agent earlier in his career, announced this week that he's running for Senate.
El-Sayed lost in his bid for governor in 2018, coming in second in a three-person primary.
He's a graduate of Andover High School in Bloomfield Township and earned an undergraduate degree from the University of Michigan. He received a doctorate in public health from the University of Oxford and a medical degree from Columbia University.
