(L-R) Councilmen Muhith Mahmood and Abu Musa
Hamtramck city officials are trying to determine whether the names of two councilmen seeking re-election should be placed on the ballot after an investigation alleged that they live outside the city, The Detroit News reports.
Hamtramck City Manager Max Garbarino said officials will address the subject at the next council meeting on May 13.
A private investigator found that Councilmember Muhith Mahmood lives in Troy and Abu Musa lives in Warren, The News reports. Both deny the allegations.
"Not only do we have a question of whether they should be on the ballot based on what this private investigator says, but also whether they should even be able to continue on council," Garbarino said.
The city attorney said that a background check of every candidate for a city office was started by a private investigations firm the day after each submitted an application to run, The News writes. Candidates are required to sign an affidavit swearing that they are Hamtramck residents.
