In the midst of growing concern about the spread of measles, the Oakland County Health Division is warning that people who visited a Rochester Hills medical office building Tuesday, June 3, between 8 a.m. and 7:30 p.m. may have been exposed to the highly contagious virus from a person from another county.
The office building is at 3950 S. Rochester Rd. in Rochester Hills, at the corner of Rochester Road and South Boulevard.
The county said those who believe they were exposed can receive Immune Globulin (IG) treatment, which is effective within six days of exposure for high-risk individuals. High-risk individuals include those who are pregnant, unvaccinated children under age 5, and people with weakened immune systems due to illness or disease—including diabetes, HIV, malnutrition, or certain medications.
The county recommends that if you're not eligible for IG, you should monitor symptoms through June 24. If symptoms develop, contact your health care provider in advance. People born in or before 1957 are generally considered immune.
The Health Division recommends that unvaccinated individuals aged 1 year and older receive the measles vaccination to protect themselves and those around them. Anyone who does not have a record of two MMR (measles, mumps, and rubella) vaccines, is unsure whether they have been vaccinated, or is uncertain whether they’ve had measles in the past should contact their health care provider.
Measles can live in the air for up to two hours in areas where an infected person coughed or sneezed. Symptoms of measles usually begin 7–14 days after exposure but can appear up to 21 days later. Symptoms may include:
- High fever (may spike to over 104°F)
- Cough
- Runny nose
- Red, watery eyes (conjunctivitis)
- Tiny white spots on the inner cheeks, gums, and roof of the mouth (Koplik spots), which appear 2–3 days after symptoms begin
- A red, raised, blotchy rash that usually starts on the face and spreads to the trunk, arms, and legs 3–5 days after symptoms begin
The MMR vaccine is available through some health care providers, the Oakland County Health Division offices in Southfield and Pontiac and pharmacies.
