WWJ reporter and anchor Mike Campbell, a fixture in Detroit journalism for nearly 30 years, died Sunday at age 65, the station reported. No cause of death was noted.
"He was our friend and co-worker at WWJ Newsradio 950, and also a friend to our listeners, bringing you the stories of the day from Detroit and across Southeast Michigan," the station said in a posting on its site. "Someone recently described him as a hero, and we can't argue with that."
"Mike covered the streets of Metro Detroit for nearly three decades and also anchored the Saturday morning news on WWJ," the station said.
In an email to The Detroit News, an Audacy spokesperson wrote that they are deeply saddened to learn of Campbell’s passing: “Mike was more than a colleague at WWJ Newsradio 950; he was a friend to us all and a trusted voice for our listeners, bringing the stories of Detroit and Southeast Michigan to life. We are truly heartbroken by this loss and extend our condolences to his family and friends."
Oakland County Executive David Coulter posted on X:
"The passing of veteran reporter Mike Campbell is a heartbreaking loss for WWJ Newsradio 950, for Oakland County - his home - and for all who knew and worked with him. Mike was a trusted voice in journalism whose warmth, professionalism and thoughtful questions always stood out."
Macomb County Exectutive Mark Hackel said on X:
"We are saddened by the passing of a true professional and gentleman, @WWJ950, Mike Campbell. He has been incredibly gracious over the years. He will be missed by all who knew him personally and professionally."
A public viewing will be held from 3 p.m. to 8 p.m. on Friday at Lynch & Sons Funeral Home in Milford.
On Saturday, there will be a viewing from 10 a.m. until 11 a.m. at Oak Pointe Church in Milford, followed by a funeral service at the church from 11 a.m. until noon.
