Downtown Detroit to Test Public Portable Bathrooms With Running Water

July 09, 2025, 10:12 AM

Finding a bathroom downtown isn't always easy, particularly with establishments posting signs that say “no public restrooms.”

So, the Downtown Detroit Partnership hopes to make life a little more convenient by opening two 24-hour bathrooms with running water in Cadillac Square, beginning Thursday, the Detroit Free Press reports. The bathrooms are being provided and maintained by the Washington, D.C.-based company Throne Labs.

The Freep reports that Detroit is the third Michigan city to install the Throne bathrooms. Ann Arbor got them first in June 2024, and Royal Oak opened its first on July 1.

The bathrooms are ADA-accessible and include a toilet, sink, and baby changing station.

Throne Labs's website says this:

We envision a world where everyone has access to clean, welcoming bathrooms. No more emergencies, lost dignity, or worry. Just relief.

We are committed to access and equity. These core values are at the center of our product design, partnerships, and service.
