Councilman Leon El-Alamin
Flint City Councilman Leon El-Alamin was arrested Tuesday afternoon in Mount Morris Township, outside Flint, on charges of assault and domestic violence involving the alleged assault of a woman, according to WJRT, an ABC affiliate.
The specific charges are assault with intent to do great bodily harm less than murder by strangulation, and domestic violence.
The arrest and allegations have prompted Councilmember Jerri Winfrey-Carter to call for his removal from the council in a post on her Facebook page.
"The disturbing and detailed statement from the survivor outlines a brutal and terrifying assault, including choking, dragging, punching, and threats of further violence," Winfrey-Carter wrote. "Her courage to speak out in the face of trauma is commendable, and I stand with her."
"I strongly believe that anyone charged with this kind of violence has no place in public office, and I hope the necessary steps are taken to remove Councilman El-Alamin from his seat."
Genesee County Prosecutor David Leyton said the Mt. Morris Township Police Department responded to a call for help from a woman who had locked herself in the bathroom and called 911, WJRT reports. Court records show an arrest warrant for El-Alamin was issued Monday, but he had not appeared for his arraignment.
Attempts by Deadline Detroit to reach him at his office, on his cell phone, and via email were unsuccessful on Wednesday.
