The historic Detroit-Windsor tunnel bus will no longer operate after Saturday, following 95 years of service.
Windsor Mayor Drew Dilkens, whose city runs the service, has said the end was the result of rising expenses. He had vetoed a council decision to save it. The service cost about $1.4 million a year to operate.
The Windsor Star reports that Dilkens wanted to end the service as a result of a 2022 change to Canada’s Labor Code that gave federal employees 10 days of paid annual medical leave on top of existing benefits. Because bus drivers cross the international border, they fall under federal labor laws.
The Star also reports that at least one private company has promised to start its own tunnel bus service.
