Detroit City Council Member Gabriela Santiago-Romero, who is running for re-election in District 6, is endorsing Council President Mary Sheffield. In turn, Sheffield is endorsing her.
Santiago-Romero is the second council member to endorse Sheffield. Councilman Fred Durhal III, who ran in the primary for mayor and will leave the council at the end of the year, has also endorsed Sheffield.
"I’m endorsing Council President Mary Sheffield for Mayor of Detroit because I believe in partnerships,” said Santiago-Romero in a statement. “From championing the Right to Counsel ordinance, to investing in our local small businesses, Mary has put in the work and will hit the ground running on day one. We both share a deep commitment to ensuring Detroiters have the opportunities they need to thrive, and that our city's revival doesn’t come at the cost of displacement."
Sheffield and Santiago-Romero made the announcement at a press conference Monday at the Joe Louis Greenway Partnership.
In a statement, Sheffield said:
“I am deeply honored to receive the endorsement of Council Member Santiago-Romero. She is a passionate advocate for Detroiters and a strong leader who fights for equity, sustainability, and opportunity in every neighborhood. I am grateful for her support as we continue working together to move Detroit forward.”
