The Detroit Free Press editorial page on Tuesday announced it is endorsing Detroit City Council President Mary Sheffield for mayor in the Nov. 4 election. '

"Outsiders often dismiss longtime elected officials as 'insiders' or "career politicians," the endorsement says. "But expertise in public service is no less important than in any other field. Detroit's needs are urgent. Sheffield is simply more qualified."

"Sheffield understands that transition can lead to disruption, and with a new mayor and new council ― and the end of a state financial review board, in place since the bankruptcy ― said she plans to strengthen financial and legal controls to guarantee that the city stays within its budget."

Earlier this month, the Detroit News endorsed Sheffield.

The Freep writes this about Sheffield's opponent, Rev. Solomon Kinloch Jr.:

"We appreciate Kinloch's urgency, his outsider perspective and willingness to challenge the status quo."

"But his goals, while laudable, show inexperience with government operations. Kinloch has pledged to build 10,000 units of affordable housing and open 10 grocery stores, but when asked, for example, how he'd make the case to for-profit grocery businesses to open more stores, he launched into a discussion of Detroiters’ needs ― unquestionably correct from a place of compassion, but not viable policy to improve food access."
