Detroit radio personality Warren Pierce of Royal Oak, who for decades was a fixture on the Detroit airwaves, died Friday at age 82.
The Detroit native was known as the host of “The Warren Pierce Show” on WJR-AM and as an anchor at Fox 2 Detroit. He worked at WJR for nearly 40 years, helping to pioneer talk radio in the mid-1970s, before more recently hosting “The Warren Pierce Show” on weekends on WDFN-AM (1130), according to the Detroit News.
His obituary on the Dorfman Chapel funeral home website said he "made an indelible mark on Michigan broadcasting. Home.
"Known for its wide-ranging interviews and energetic storytelling, Warren interviewed over 70,000 people over the years," the obit said. "His work extended beyond the studio, as he broadcast live from across Michigan and around the world. His distinctive voice, curiosity, and unwavering commitment to his craft left an enduring impression on listeners across the state."
The obituary says he became an avid University of Michigan football fan, which began when he was a sideline reporter for WJR under Coach Bo Schembechler.
"Throughout his life, Warren had a deep love for animals, particularly Golden Retrievers," the obit said. "He spent his days with his beloved dog, Duke, who provided him with immense comfort and companionship.
'Warren will be remembered for his passion for broadcasting, his sharp intellect, and the decades he dedicated to informing and entertaining the people of Michigan."
He is survived by his four daughters: Karen (Ryan) Rosett; Meredith (Alan) Block; Alexandra (Zachary) Taves; and Samantha Pierce. He is also survived by his grandchildren Jane, Esther, Abe, and Joey. He maintained close relationships with his former wives, Darlene Sosnick and Jacquelyn Pierce.
The funeral is set for Tuesday (Nov. 4) at 10 a.m. at Dorfman Chapel, 30440 W. 12 Mile Rd, Farmington Hills. A live stream of the service will be broadcasted on Tuesday on the chapel website.
