Detroit's White Stripes were inducted Saturday night into the Rock & Roll Hall of Fame at the Peacock Theater in Los Angeles.

"To the young artist, I want to say: get your hands dirty, drop the screens, get out of your garage or your little room, and get obsessed," said Jack White, who accepted the award. "Get obsessed with something — get passionate. We all want to share in what you might create."

“Today, the White Stripes are proud to represent the sound of Detroit punk and garage rock, and all of its bands and artists,” he said. His former bandmate and ex-wife, Meg White, did not attend.

Other inductees Saturday included Joe Cocker, Chubby Checker, Cyndi Lauper, and Warren Zevon.

Jack and Meg White of the White Stripes were married in 1996 and divorced in 2000.

The Rock & Roll Hall of Fame website describes the White Stripes this way:

The White Stripes reinvigorated rock & roll by returning it to its primal blues roots, proving that a duo with defiant energy, catchy riffs, melodic savvy and unique style could captivate as much, if not more, than a large, complex ensemble. Both live and on record, mastermind multi-instrumentalist and vocalist Jack White and minimalist drummer Meg White crafted a sound greater than the sum of its parts, inspiring artists from multiple genres.
