Fred Durhal Jr., a former aide to Mayor Coleman A. Young who served in the state House of Representatives and became the first Black political director of the Michigan Democratic Party, died Wednesday after a lengthy illness. He was 73.

Durhal, the father of Detroit City Councilman Fred Durhal III, was known for his public service and commitment to the city of Detroit.

"Tonight I lost my best friend, my mentor, my Dad," his son posted on Facebook on Wednesday. "I wouldn’t be completely honest at this moment if I didn’t say that a piece of me feels empty. However, I would also be remiss if I didn’t mention how blessed I was to have such an amazing human being that touched my life. I have no regrets because the time I spent with him were truly some of the greatest times of my life."

"My father was the greatest man I have ever known. He was the greatest father in the world and he poured so much of himself into to me, even at times when he didnt have much to give. Throughout my life he guided me, supported me, and stood by me every step of the way."

Born in Rochester, N.Y., he attended Detroit Public Schools and earned his bachelor's degree in political science from Wayne State University in 1975. From 2006 to 2008, he attended the University of Phoenix, where he studied public administration.

His list of accomplishments was lengthy and impressive.

Jackie Vaughn III, communications analyst for the Michigan House of Representatives Democratic staff, and executive director of the Michigan Legislative Black Caucus.

He served a brief stint in the state House of Representatives in 2002–2003 and from 2009–2015.

"Fred Durhal Jr. was someone who really worked hard to make Detroit a better city,"  political commentator Adolph Mongo told Deadline Detroit. "Throughout his career as an appointee for the late Coleman A. Young, and as an elected official, Fred worked to improve the quality of life for Detroiters. He will be missed."

Durhal, who was divorced, is survived by his children, Fred, Justin, Brian, Briana, Bianca, and Charles.

Detroit Mayor Mike Duggan issued a statement on X:

"Detroit lost one of its most tireless champions and dedicated public servants yesterday. Fred Durhal, Jr., the father of City Council member Fred Durhal, III represented Detroit with a blend of fire and human compassion in the State House that earned him the respect of his peers and the admiration of his constituents. During the city's bankruptcy, no one fought harder than Rep. Durhal for Detroit's retirees.

Detroit Mayor-elect Mary Sheffield said on X:

"I am deeply saddened by the passing of Fred Durhal Jr., a remarkable leader and tireless advocate for Detroiters. His decades of public service strengthened our communities and inspired generations."

Congresswoman Rashida Tlaib said:

"I join our community in mourning the loss of Fred Durhal Jr., my former colleague, who was a dedicated leader who spent decades fighting for Detroiters. From his years in the State House to Chair of the Michigan Legislative Black Caucus, he brought passion, courage, and commitment to public service."

"His contributions helped shape our communities and uplift countless lives. I am sending my deepest condolences to his family, children, and all who were touched by his life. His legacy will not be forgotten. May he rest in peace."

The Michigan Democratic Party said in a statement:

“Throughout his entire life, Fred Durhal Jr. was a fighter, dedicating his life to helping others through public service. His loss is felt deeply by this party and across the state, and our thoughts are with his children and grandchildren.”

His son, in his Facebook posting, concluded:

"Dad… you were a fighter until the very end. You not only fought the good fight, you won so many times. They don’t make them like you. You were courageous, rarely complained, and took each day as another chance to fight. And now is your time to rest great hero. Thank you for all you have done for me."

"Thank you for showing me the example of how a man, a father, and a leader should be. I will be sure to fufill the promises I made to you and continue to do my best to make you proud. As you were there for my first breath, my heart is full as I stood by you for your last breath. There is no me, without you. I Love You always."
