Michigan Motorists to Pay Slightly Higher Fuel Tax in 2026

At a time of discomforting inflation, Michigan consumers would like to pay less, not more.

But come Jan. 1, motorists in the state will pay a higher fuel tax at the pump.

Paul Egan of the Detroit Free Press reports that Michigan’s fuel tax will increase to 52.4 cents per gallon, up from 31 cents.

However, that increase will be mostly offset by the removal, beginning Jan. 1, of a 6 percent sales tax on motor fuel.

In the end, the hike consumers see amounts to about 1.4 cents per gallon, according to the Michigan Department of Treasury.
