Detroit’s Hygrade Deli, which opened its doors in 1955, is closed and in receivership, the Detroit Free Press reports.
The deli at 3640 Michigan Avenue, west of Corktown, over the decades served mayors, lawyers, journalists, and blue-collar workers. It was also where some movies, including “Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice,” the TV show “Detroit 187,” and music videos were filmed.
The Freep reports the restaurant closed at the end of December.
In 2022, Stuart Litt sold the restaurant his father bought in 1972 to Chuck Nolan, owner of Cutter’s Bar and Grill in the Eastern Market area.
The Freep reports that the business owes $642,790, not including interest, on two defaulted loans from the Detroit Invest Foundation. Nolan tells the Freep he was able to pay $200,000 to bring the loans current, but the lender refused to work something out.
Court-appointed receiver Turkia Mullin tells the Freep the building is in need of serious repairs and that there are unpaid unemployment taxes, delinquent property taxes, and a notice of a pending tax foreclosure.
She said the goal is to restore operations under new ownership.
