Snow and slippery roads Monday morning turned I-196 in the Hudsonville area, a suburb of Grand Rapids, into a parking lot following a 100-vehicle collision that included semi trucks, the Michigan State Police reported.

The Ottawa County Sheriff's Department said 10 people suffered minor injuries. The freeway was closed in both directions.

Sheriff's Capt. Jake Sparks, who appeared live on CNN, said the accident began when a car hit a semi truck.

State Police said crews are working to safely remove all non-involved vehicles from the area.

Police said there were 30 to 40 semi trucks on the freeway, but not all vehicles stuck on the freeway were involved in the crash.

The incident happened shortly after 10 a.m.

State Police were assisting the Ottawa County Sheriff’s Office.
