As Demand Grows, Michigan Planned Parenthood Offers Vasectomies

Citing an increase in demand for “permanent birth control,” Planned Parenthood of Michigan is now offering vasectomy services to patients, Bridge Michigan reports.

The minor surgery for men, which involves cutting and sealing the vas deferens tubes to block sperm from semen, is being offered after the U.S. Supreme Court overturned abortion access across the country. In Michigan, abortions remain legal.

The surgery typically takes under 30 minutes and is done in a clinic or a doctor’s office.

The service will first be offered at the organization's Irwin/Martin health center in Grand Rapids, with more locations expected to be added throughout the year, Bridge reports.

“The demand is real and present,” Dr. Kate Starr, chief medical officer at Planned Parenthood of Michigan, told Bridge Michigan. “Patients and their partners are looking for ways to control their lives and their families, and vasectomy is one of the ways in which they can do that.”
