Grosse Pointe Schools Hires First Black Superintendent

Roy Bishop Jr. becomes the Grosse Pointe Public School System’s first Black superintendent. He is a longtime administrator with the district who previously served as deputy superintendent, the Detroit News reports.

The GPPSS Board of Education on Monday unanimously approved the hiring of Bishop, who replaces Andrea Tuttle, who is retiring.

The News reports: 

Two board members voiced objections about the lack of a full search and interview process. They ultimately voted in support of hiring Bishop after speaking with him directly and making an amendment to the resolution approving his selection.
