WXYZ's Brad Galli

Detroit sportscaster Brad Galli, who became a fixture on WXYZ's nightly newscast, is leaving the station on May 1 after 15 years.

"This was my decision, and I thank our leaders at Broadcast House for treating me with kindness, listening, and ultimately, understanding," Galli wrote in a message on Thursday to colleagues and in a posting on social media.

"As far as what's next in my career, I'm excited to work more independently in this new chapter, sharing my work in new places that allow me to be around more often at night with my wife and kids. I'm going to continue with the same work ethic, and creativity that so many of you have helped me foster. It's been an honor and I have no doubt that my friendships will endure."

Comments of support came pouring in on his Facebook page.

That's great news for you but not for us. I've said it many times, you are the best in the business so it will be sad to see you go. Happy for the family though and yourself. Good Luck.
