The new 25-story JW Marriott Detroit Water Square convention center hotel on the Detroit River has yet to be completed.

With that in mind, the developers of that project — the Detroit Regional Convention Facility Authority (DRCFA) and Detroit-based developer The Sterling Group — now have plans to build another 600-room, $450 million hotel next to the Huntington Place convention center, Kirk Pinho of Crain's Detroit Business reports.

The new hotel would connect to the convention center via a skywalk and require an entire city block to be demolished to make room — the block between Fort Street, Washington Boulevard, Cass Avenue and Congress Street next to Huntington Place, Crain's reports.

The city has concerns that it's losing out on major events and conventions because of a shortage of hotel rooms near Huntington Place. Construction would begin early next year, with an opening in 2029.
