Detroit People Mover Resumes Service After Weeks of Closure

May 06, 2026, 10:15 AM by  Allan Lengel

The Detroit People Mover, which shut down for several weeks for repairs due to wind damage, officially reopens Wednesday.

The 2.9-mile rail system closed for repairs on March 13 following damage from high winds.

In March, the system posted this on Facebook:

"The system closed the afternoon of March 13, following hours of high winds which deposited both light and heavy debris on the guideway track. Once it was safe for crews to walk all elevations of the system, they performed multiple inspections.

"Teams discovered that a large piece of metal underneath one of the train vehicles tore through a significant length of track cable. Trains were moved only after all objects were cleared to avoid further issues."

There is no charge to ride the system.
