A self-described "creative fairy godmother" from Warren has been named the first Miss Voluptuous America at a competition in Nashville.
Amanda Sweet, 32, was a pageant novice but no stranger to modeling when she stumbled upon the competition for women over size 10, The Macomb Daily reports in a subscribers-only post.
The Warren resident tells the paper she hopes her rising profile will enable her to do more volunteer work:
Recently, Sweet hosted a clothing swap event to give women the opportunity to exchange items of clothing. Any items that were not taken were donated to various charities. She had a plus-size clothing workshop where clothing and toiletry items and coupons were donated to homeless teens.
“I think of myself as a creative fairy godmother; I just wave my wand and make stuff happen,” said Sweet. ... "I feel like this crown is the key to being able to connect with people and help them.
“We can absolutely change the world.”
She plans another swap, in association with Michigan Fashion Week, for June 11.
