Metro Detroit businessman Kevin Adell, who owns WADL-TV (Ch. 38), radio station WFDF-AM (910) and religious network The Word Network, plans to retire and sell his properties, the Detroit News reports.

"My passion's somewhere else, you know," said Adell, 57. "My daughter's going to college. ... I've been doing this for 34 years."

The News reports that the Federal Communications Commission approved the sale in April of WADL to Mission Broadcasting, with several conditions. Adell said Mission Broadcasting "didn't want to buy it because of the conditions," so the $75 million deal fell through.

WADL reaches about 2 million households, according to the station.

Adell has found himself in the midst of controvesies over the years.
