The Red Wings have had occasional flashes of goodness this season. The rest has been disappointing.

So this was bound to happen.

On Thursday, Executive Vice President and General Manager Steve Yzerman announced the firing of head Coach Derek Lalonde Associate Coach Bob Boughner.

In his place, the Wings hired head Coach Todd McLellan, who signed a multi-year contract. Trent Yawney was named assistant coach.

The firing comes as the Wings sit in second from last place in the Atantic Division with a 13-17-4 record and 30 points.

McLellan, 57, spent 16 seasons of NHL as a head coach. His last top was the Los Angeles Kings.

McLellan’s teams have also advanced to the Stanley Cup Playoffs nine times, including six-consecutive postseason appearances with the Sharks, the Red Wings site says.
