Duggan's Deputy Mayor Will Head Up the Detroit People Mover

Mayor Mike Duggan's Deputy Mayor Melia Howard becomes the new general manager of the Detroit Transportation Corp., which owns and operates the Detroit People Mover. The appointment is effective Jan. 1. 

Howard  was unanimously approved by the DTC Board of Directors. She becomes the eighth General Manager in DTC’s 38-year history.

A press release says:

A lifelong Detroiter, Melia brings deep leadership experience from her service as Deputy Mayor, Director of Community Engagement, and District 5 Manager for the City of Detroit. Her work has helped advance major civic and development projects across the city, including the University of Michigan Center for Innovation, Fisher Body 21, and numerous affordable housing initiatives.

As General Manager, Melia will build on the People Mover’s role as a trusted public transportation system, focusing on mobility, access, opportunity, infrastructure improvements, and technology enhancements for both residents and visitors.

The Detroit People Mover began operations July 31, 1987 while Mayor Coleman A. Young was in office.
